Daniel Fuentes
Sr. Fuentes was born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico raised in Acuña, Coahuila México, and graduated from Crane High School in Crane, TX. He then graduated from Southwest Texas State with a degree in Spanish. This summer his family went to Puerto Rico and Mexico where they enjoyed the great beaches, food, music and culture. Sr. Fuentes teaches Spanish II and III Pre-AP and is also the Head Boys' Basketball Coach and assistant track. He is in his 19th year of teaching and coaching and this will be his 17th at McCallum, where he began in 1998. He coached Varsity football for 13 yrs. He coached Varsity receivers and safeties. He was also the special teams coordinator. Sra. Gun was raised in the Texas Panhandle! She is proud to be from Friona, Texas. She arrived in Austin fall of 1977 and has lived here ever since. She graduated from South West Texas State University with a Liberal Arts degree. She has been teaching Spanish since 1990. She has taught at two junior high schools; O'Henry Middle School (Austin, Texas) and Bonnette Jr. High (Deer Park Texas). She was also fortunate to have taught at Bowie High School for three years . She is so proud to be a McCallum Knight and working at the the city's BEST high school. She teaches Spanish 1, Spanish 4 AP Language and Spanish 5 AP Literature. She also sponsors the Ballet Folklorico Dance team which performs all over the city at elementary schools and businesses that want us to help them celebrate fiestas. She also has had the blessing of being able to travel with her students. She has taken students to Spain, Italy, France and the Dominican Republic. Making the culture and the language come to life for them has been an incredible experience that she hopes to keep promoting. Karen Kasmiroski grew up in Waco, TX and has lived in Austin for the past 20+ years. She taught at Lamar Middle School for 7 years, then graduated to McCallum in 2001. Before settling down in Austin, she lived abroad in Japan, China, and Italy and has since studied in Burgos and Santiago de Compostela, Spain. She loves teaching Spanish and hopes to inspire students to broaden their horizons and explore other languages and cultures. 李老师 Li Laoshi is the newest member of our family, beginning as the Chinese teacher in the Fall of 2014. Born and raised in Taiwan, ROC, Ms. Lee attended Cheng-Chi National University, earning a Bachelor's degree in Art History, She then earned her Master's in Computer Science at Texas A&M Commerce. Nicholas Martin
McCallum has been Mr. Martin's only teaching home, beginning here as a student teacher in 1995 and was then hired in 1997 as only the 4th Latin teacher since McCallum opened. Prior to teaching, Mr. Martin attended the University of Texas where he majored in both English and Latin. From there, he received his Master's degree in Latin and Greek from The Ohio State University. In 2000, he was awarded a Fulbright grant to study in both Rome and Naples, Italy. In 2014, Mr. Martin was awarded a National Science Foundation grant to study Roman building materials and techniques through the help of UT's Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering. In 2015, Mr. Martin was named Texas Foreign Language Association Latin teacher of the year. He has led students and their parents on tours to Italy many times in the past and has no plans to to stop. Additionally, Mr. Martin serves as Chairman of the department and is also the boys' varsity soccer coach. Nishida Sensei, a native of Toyama, Japan, has been McCallum's Japanese teacher since 1999. During that time, he has also taught at both Kealing and Lamar Middle Schools. Sensei studied English at Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka, Japan. He then earned his Master's degree in Sociology from Morehead State University in Kentucky. Sra. Ríos-Tiessen was born and raised in the deep South Texas region of the Rio Grande Valley along the Mexican border in McAllen, TX. After a summer studying in Guanajuato, Guanajuato, México and living with a host family to study Spanish formally, she went home to change her major to Spanish. She has since done extensive traveling around Europe and spent much time exploring the Ruta Maya in México and Central America. Mrs. Ríos-Tiessen attended The University of North Texas for undergraduate work and graduated from The University of Texas-Pan American with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and a Minor in Mexican-American Studies. In 2012, Sra. Ríos-Tiessen began her second stint at McCallum, having first taught here from 2003-2007. She teaches Spanish II and Spanish III Pre-AP. Madame von Rosenberg has enjoyed teaching French for over 25 years. She has been at McCallum since 2003, and she plans on being a French Knight for as long as the Royal Court Players are still performing. She received a Bachelor of Science degree with highest honors from the University of Texas at Austin. Her teaching fields include both French and English, but as her passion is for languages, she has also studied Italian and dabbled in other languages like Spanish, Japanese, and German. She works hard to ensure her students learn how to comprehend, speak, read and write in French so that they can achieve whatever personal goals they have for their foreign language learning, whether it be traveling and conversing with French speakers on any continent or obtaining college credit through advanced placement credit. She teaches all of the levels of French here at McCallum. In her free time she enjoys music, gardening, sports, and being outdoors.
